The Surrey-Langley SkyTrain, now officially renamed the Dave Barrett Extension, is a 16-kilometre expansion of the Expo Line connecting King George Station in Surrey to Langley City Centre, with eight new stations expected to open in late 2029. Two of those stations, Hillcrest–184 Street and Clayton, will serve West Clayton directly, putting Zenterra’s new condo buildings, Atlin and Bute at Clayton Crest, just three blocks or less than a 10 minute walk from rapid transit.

What Is the Dave Barrett Extension?

Named after former BC premier Dave Barrett, the extension recognizes his government’s role in expanding public transit south of the Fraser during the 1970s. It will operate as a direct extension of the Expo Line, so future riders travel to the broader SkyTrain network without transferring at King George.

Construction is visibly well underway. As of September 2026, the BC government stated that more than 60 percent of the elevated guideway is complete, and the project remains on track for service in late 2029.

Once open, the trip between Langley City Centre and King George Station is expected to take approximately 22 minutes. The project also includes about 14 kilometres of cycling and multi-use pathways and is expected to support roughly 56,000 weekday riders in its opening year, growing to 80,000 by 2050. Those figures come from a 2025 BC government release on the Surrey Langley SkyTrain.

Why Clayton Is a Community to Watch

Two of the new stations, Hillcrest–184 Street and Clayton, sit close to West Clayton. The future Hillcrest–184 Street Station is especially relevant to Clayton Crest, Zenterra’s seven building master planned community located at 18088 72nd Avenue, with the new station sitting just three blocks away from Zenterra’s new homes at Clayton Crest.

Construction on the first two buildings, Atlin and Bute, began in 2026, with completion estimated for spring 2028. That means new housing, transit infrastructure, roads and amenities are all developing at the same time, giving future residents a neighbourhood that grows with them rather than one they arrive into after the fact.

Bringing the Community Together

On July 25, 2026, residents were invited to Hillcrest Village Shopping Centre to sign a segment of the SkyTrain’s guideway. As the BC government’s Transportation Investment Corporation (TIC) put it, the event was “inspired by a long-standing construction tradition; we’re inviting the community to leave their mark by signing a guideway segment that will become part of the future transit line.”

Atlin and Bute at Clayton Crest

Atlin, the first building at Clayton Crest, offers studio, two and three bedroom homes. Across the full masterplan, residents will share more than 30,000 square feet of amenities, including rooftop outdoor space, a fitness facility, games room, party lounge, co-working space, playgrounds, community gardens and an on-site daycare with priority access for residents. Homes feature nine-foot ceilings, full size appliances, a five-burner gas cooktop, in-suite laundry and built-in closet organizers.

Bute, the second building, follows with one, two and three bedroom homes as part of the same seven building masterplan. It’s also positioned to benefit from the 72nd Avenue extension, another infrastructure project reshaping how residents move through the area.

What SkyTrain Access Means for Future Residents

Rapid transit adds flexibility to daily life. A Clayton Crest homeowner might drive to run errands, take SkyTrain to work, walk to a nearby amenity or cycle along the area’s growing active transportation network. For a fast-growing community like West Clayton, that connectivity is a key part of long-term planning, not just a convenience.

A Community Built Around Connectivity

West Clayton is seeing several major projects converge at once: the Dave Barrett Extension, the 72nd Avenue extension, the new Surrey Hospital and BC Cancer Centre, and continued development of housing, schools and parks throughout the area. Clayton Crest was designed with this future in mind, as an interconnected, seven building community rather than a single standalone tower.

Atlin and Bute are now under construction, forming the first chapters of that vision. As Surrey continues to grow, West Clayton is no longer just changing. It’s connecting.
